Victor Vasarely (French, 1906-1997)
Victor Vasarely is an artist who is widely considered as the "Grandfather" of the Op art movement.
Victor Vasarely was born in Pécs and grew up in what is now Slovakia and Budapest. After abandoning a career in medicine, he studied art at Volkmann Acadamy and Sandor Bortnyik's Muhely (workshop). Vasarely became a graphic designer during the 1930s, eventually moving to Paris. He would emmerse himself in geometric abstract art and minimalism, ultimately honing in on optical illusion as a means of expression.
Considered the "grandfather" of Op art, his works can be found in various museums throughout the world.
